Steven Poulton - Radio Journalism in Accra and Cape Coast

When my sister arrived back from Ghana having undergone her medical placement it was hard to keep her quiet, but after visiting the country myself I can understand why, Ghana was simply amazing.

I lived in Accra, the capital, and as I saw it, the hub of transport for Ghana. From Accra you can go practically anywhere in the country, but don't be afraid to visit some of the attractions the city has to offer like the energetic markets, museums and not forgetting the shops full of bizarre coffins, which in fact are transported all over the world.

My second place of living was in Cape Coast, the biggest difference with here and Accra is the size. From this quiet town you can explore western Ghana, not too far away is West Africa's largest market, Kumasi, probably the biggest and most vibrant market in the whole of Ghana.

I worked on two placements, Choice FM in Accra and Atlantic FM at Cape Coast University, both were amazing but more importantly extremely fun. Choice FM was non-stop, being in the heart of the city, there was always something to do. During my time I interviewed Ghana's Olympic Committee and met the head coach of Accra's football team. Atlantic FM was very different to this, rather than going out everyday I was always working at the station. I met some fantastic people including the stations top DJ's and by the end of my placement I was co-hosting 'Drive Time', the most listened to programme in western Ghana.

Ghana was one of those life-changing experiences, I met some fantastic friends who I stay in contact with today, was privileged to see some of the most beautiful locations I will ever encounter and learned so many things about myself that will be applied in work and leisure throughout my life.

No matter what project you do, treat it as your future job, travel around with other volunteers and see what Ghana really has to offer, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity so make the most of it!
